Call them by name and smile.

First of all, a word and a gesture can completely change the start of a conversation. And starting well is already a big step forward, right?

First, the word: the name of the person you're talking to. A name is one of the most important words a person can hear. Everyone likes to hear their own name. You might say that some people don't like their names. That's possible, but there's always a nickname, an abbreviation, or a way that person likes to be called.  Calling her by name sends the message that you care about her and value her.

And the gesture, very simple yet powerful: a smile. It doesn't need to be exaggerated or performative. A light, natural smile already communicates a lot.  A smile conveys openness, availability, and satisfaction at being there. And this immediately changes how the other person receives your words.

Communication begins before words. Before argumentation, before explanation, before negotiation.

Communication begins in the atmosphere of interaction.  Saying someone's name and smiling are small gestures, but they completely change the start of a conversation.

Try it!

Before starting the next conversation, call them by name and smile. Then tell me about it!
